The Basilica of San Marco – what to look out

The Basilica of San Marco was built during the eleventh century and was embellished and reworked for the next five hundred years, as Venice> Venice mp3cityguides guide explains.

The church of San Marcos clearly looks Byzantine or Eastern Europe the East and this was because Venice had strong trade links with the Eastern Mediterranean and Venetian merchants regularly purchased – or simply stolen – art Constantinople, today € ™ s Istanbul.

One of the most striking aspects of the front of the church are the two rows of columns arches. between the lower arches are marble recovered from previous churches. Among the various reliefs between the arches you can see Hercules carrying a boar, the Virgin Mary, the angel Gabriel and, finally, along the right, St. George, who is a patron saint of Venice and England, slaying the dragon.

San Marcos wasn € ™ t Veniceâ € ™ s first patron saint. That honor fell to San Teodoro, but as the city grew in wealth and importance during the ninth century it was decided that trade up. The official story was that San Marcos had been sailing on a boat in the lake, where an angel appeared and told him Venice would be his resting place.

The true story that Venetians are not at all ashamed is that two businessmen were sent to Alexandria in Egypt, San Marcos where entombed. took the body – or his remains in any case – and took him back to Venice, where he was in the first church on this site before being transferred to it.

Above the door further to the left you can see that shows a mosaic of San Marcos to reach the Basilica. This is the first mosaic throughout Outside the church. Next above the next door over the dates from the eighteenth century, as seen by the stronger colors, the most naturalist of the people and the Venetians Sample detail. venerate the relics of St. Mark.

The door is half the Doomsday mosaic showing on it with Christ the cross and people are prepared for heaven or Hell. then sent to the three arches carved around the central portal are magnificent examples of Romanesque was the artistic style of the early half ages. If you look inside the arc outside youâ € ™ ll see sample shipbuilding, which does the barrel and fishing, all of which are typical Venetian activities. the central arch represents the months of the year – at the top you can see the grapes, which means September.

The inner arc of the sample to Earth, the seas and the seven pairs of animals, perhaps an illusion for the Ark of Noah.

The cover sample along next Venice welcomes the arrival of St. Mark, while the fifth sample door of San Marka € ™ s body will take Alexandria. youâ € ™ ll notice that the men in turbans are a face of disgust and dismay at the content of basket. This is because it said the Saint ™ € s body was hidden under the joints of pork so that the Alexandrians, who were Muslims and pork as dirty did not approach the contents of basket. You can see a man is still holding his nose.

Above the doors is a balcony that can be reached from inside the church. It is well worth it for the views and the opportunity to get closer to the top row of mosaics depicting scenes from the life of central window Christ. have arches on each side you can see the images – from left to right – of Christ off the cross, his descent into hell, resurrection and, finally, his face ascension. the central window there are four horses – one of the great symbols of Venice. In fact, they are copies, the originals are protected from the elements in the museum church.

At the top of the basilica you can see a statue of San Marcos with angels on either side of him.

If you want to go into the church to be prepared to get turned tail and very quickly. it worth trying to see, however – they are some 4,000 square meters of mosaics and a stunning gold altarpiece gold.
